I first learned of the existence of Rojiura Curry SAMURAI., a restaurant specializing in soup curry, when I was casually searching for a place to eat soup curry in Osaka and Kyoto on the Internet. This restaurant has a branch in Grand Front Osaka, and it seems that there are a total of 20 restaurants in Japan and abroad. As of August 2024, it may be the most widely popular Sapporo soup curry restaurant.
I was curious to know what the original store of such a popular restaurant was like, so I visited the main restaurant, Rojiura Curry SAMURAI. Hiragishi Sohonten, on my recent business trip to Sapporo. As you might expect, this restaurant is a legendary restaurant that has won the “100 Best Curry Restaurants” award many times in the “Tabelog”. I wonder what kind of soup curry they serve? I am very curious…
An old private house-like space with a considerably tasteful atmosphere…Rojiura Curry SAMURAI. Hiragishi Sohonten is a restaurant like this.
Rojiura Curry SAMURAI. Hiragishi Sohonten is located a short distance from Route 453. The building is rather large, and the large character “侍.” is prominently displayed on the wall, so it is easy to find the location of the restaurant. However, it looks like a common wooden apartment building that has been remodeled and used as a restaurant, and my first impression was that it looked a little cheap (excuse me!).
Well, the appearance of the restaurant has nothing to do with the quality of the food…
Upon entering the restaurant, there is a coffee shop-like counter seating in the front, and a spacious seating area with tables and a small tatami room in the back to the left of the counter. The total number of seats is 38 according to the information from the Tabelog. The space between the seats next to each other is rather wide, so diners can enjoy their meal without feeling oppressed.
The interior of the restaurant is quite tasteful. The chairs and lighting seem to be made from a collection of second-hand vintage items, creating a retro, old-fashioned space as a whole. The slightly dark lighting amplifies the retro feel and creates an extraordinary atmosphere, and although it is hard to put it into words, I feel a sense of “good taste” in many places. Also, the interior walls of the restaurant are entirely made of glass, and the view of the courtyard through the windows is a nice touch. It is the kind of restaurant that makes us feel at home, even if I don’t really know what it is.
A must-see for first-timers! Here’s how to order soup curry at Rojiura Curry SAMURAI. Hiragishi Sohonten, including soup types, spiciness settings, and more!
Now, for those who are new to Sapporo Soup Curry, here is a step-by-step guide on how to order soup curry at Rojiura Curry SAMURAI. Hiragishi Sohonten…
1. Choose a soup curry
First, choose one soup curry from the menu. There are a total of 10 types of soup curry that can be ordered, including curry for children. The restaurant seems to put a particular emphasis on vegetables, so you will find a good amount of vegetables in every menu item.
2. Choosing soup
After choosing your main soup curry…

- Mild (creamy soup with Japanese soup stock and soy milk) Free
- Coconut (soup with sweetened coconut milk) +100 yen

You can choose one of the four types of soups (prices do not include tax). The soups are made at the company’s own factory and shipped nationwide, so no matter where you go in Japan, you can enjoy the exact same taste.
3. Choosing the spiciness

5. Choosing toppings
Finally, finish your order by selecting toppings of your choice. In addition to the common ones such as vegetables, chicken, and pork cubes, the restaurant offers a variety of different toppings such as burnt cheese and ground natto. Once you get used to Sapporo Soup Curry, it would be interesting to try these different toppings to change the taste.
It is gorgeous with so many vegetables! I tried the most popular menu item “Chicken and 20 Vegetables for a Day” at Rojiura Curry SAMURAI. Hiragishi Sohonten!
This time I ordered the most popular menu item at Rojiura Curry SAMURAI. Hiragishi Sohonten: Chicken and 20 Vegetables for a Day (priced at 1,650 plus tax). All customizations are within the free range: soup regular, spiciness 4, rice M size…
A little over 10 minutes of waiting after ordering, the soup curry was brought in front of me, and the soup curry came out in a bowl almost like a flat plate like this. The ingredients are colorful and gorgeous looking, but on the other hand, the amount of curry soup seems to be quite small.
The curry soup is not only small in quantity, but it is also quite thick, so that it is no longer like soup curry but like regular curry roux. It tastes like a spicy curry with a strong sourness from the tomatoes, and the spiciness comes a little later. The spiciness, however, is not stimulated by various spices, but rather a simple chili pepper spiciness. I could hardly feel the soup’s broth, and to be honest, I thought it was quite lacking in terms of aroma, including the spice….
On the other hand, the ingredients were the most substantial in my past soup curry eating history. The vegetables were fresh and crispy, and the flavor of each ingredient could be fully enjoyed with minimal cooking. The size of each vegetable is not so big. The taste of vegetables is different from that of the fried vegetables at Soup Curry Suage+. The size of each vegetable is not too large, and you can feel that the vegetables are designed to be easy to eat, even for women.
The main topping, the chicken leg, can be selected from two options when ordering: “crispy” or “tender.” I ordered it “crispy,” and it was just as I said, with a crispy surface and a flaky interior, allowing me to enjoy all the deliciousness of the chicken leg.
I can’t complain about the ingredients in Rojiura Curry SAMURAI. Hiragishi Sohonten‘s soup curry, but I felt the volume of the curry soup and rice was not enough. I was not satisfied with the taste of the soup in particular this time, but maybe my stupid tongue was a bit off, so I will try Rojiura Curry SAMURAI. again at Grand Front in Osaka if I have a chance.
