Indian Curry, known as the originator of Osaka’s sweet and spicy curry, has a total of 10 branches in Osaka, Hyogo, and Tokyo, centering on the main branch in Namba (note: as of October 2023). The main restaurant, Indian Curry Minami Branch, offers only curry and rice as its menu, but each of its affiliate restaurants, which became independent after training there, now offers menus other than curry, and the menu composition at each restaurant is different.
Among these Indian Curry restaurants, the Hanshin branch introduced here is the only one among the 10 that offers a menu item called “Jambalaya. What is jambalaya and what does it taste like? We were curious, so we went to the restaurant…
Among the many restaurants in the Hanshin Baru Yokocho area, Indian Curry Hanshin Branch is by far the easiest to get into…
I visited Indian Curry Hanshin Branch around 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon. Although it was already past the peak of lunch time, the Hanshin Baru Yokocho on the second basement floor of the Hanshin Department Store, where the restaurant is located, was packed with a huge crowd. The Hanshin Bar Yokocho is home to “Naniwa Menjiro Zen,” the second branch of Naniwa Menjiro in Namba, “Grill Ron,” one of Umeda’s popular Western-style restaurants along with Budotei and Grill Oufuken, and “Kitashinchi Tonkatsu epais,” a branch of Michelin-listed restaurant “epais. At the storefronts of these restaurants, even at this time of the day, there are close to 10 customers waiting to be guided into the restaurant without any problems.
Compared to these surrounding stores, it is overwhelmingly easy to enter Indian Curry Hanshin Branch. It is not because there are not many customers. It is because, like any curry stand, the turnover of customers is remarkably fast. There are 17 counter seats and 3 tables for 2 people, and even though customers are constantly coming in, there are a few empty seats here and there… Even if you look around all the restaurants in Hanshin Department Store, this restaurant is the strongest in terms of quick meals.
How was the jambalaya, a restaurant-exclusive menu item only available at the Indian Curry Hanshin Branch, when you actually tried it?
Let me introduce you to the target of this article, the jambalaya (priced at 730 yen including tax), a store-only menu item available only at the Indian Curry Hanshin branch. As soon as you finish your order, you will immediately see pickled cabbage from this stock…
After that, the jambalaya appeared in less than 3 minutes! This is my personal first experience with jambalaya, and here is a picture of it…
According to Wikipedia, jambalaya is one of the Creole dishes eaten in the New Orleans area of the U.S., and has its origins in Spanish paella. Why is such a dish served here? Although there is a question as to why such a dish is served here, it is not something that is easily available, at least not in the Osaka area. In that sense, I feel that Indian Curry Hanshin Branch deserves more attention from Osaka foodies.
That aside, let’s get right to the actual meal… It’s cooked rice, so it’s not the same as fried rice, which is a parapara rice. The rice is not sticky, which is a concern, and is cooked well with a sticky feel. When you put it in your mouth, you lightly feel the sourness of tomatoes, and at almost the same time, the stimulation of spicy chili and the spicy sensation spread in your mouth. But the spiciness itself is less intense than the sweet and spicy curry. Because of this, I think the spiciness is more enjoyable here because you are not distracted by the spiciness.
The ingredients in this cooked rice are quite simple: green peas, sausage, and corn. Similarly, I felt that this jambalaya was a dish to simply enjoy the spice. It is a little unsatisfying if you want to finish a meal with just this, but I think it is just right for snacking when you are hungry. It might also be a good idea to eat it as a way to wake up from sleep before an important work.
Traditional sweet and spicy curry and hashed rice are also available… To get to the Indian Curry Hanshin Branch, walk 0 minutes from the nearest station, Umeda Station on the Hanshin Railway.
At the Indian Curry Hanshin branch like this, you can enjoy traditional sweet and spicy curry and hashed rice as well as the jambalaya introduced in this article. Looking at the customers that day, the Indian Curry was the most popular among the three menu items. When you come to Indian Curry, curry is the first thing you should try. The restaurant is directly connected to Umeda Station on the Hanshin Railway, so if you want something light to eat when you change trains, why not use it? How about using it when you want something light to eat when you change trains?
Here are the details of the restaurant. Restaurant data is below…
