A high-class yakiniku restaurant that can be used with confidence even for business entertainment… I suspect that many people in Kyoto have such an image of the famous yakiniku restaurant Tendan. In fact, this image is true. When opening the menu, there are many meats that cost 2,000 to 3,000 yen per person, including “Ozaki beef” that costs nearly 5,000 yen per person… That’s not a place that a loner like me or an ordinary family with small children can easily go to.
But did you know that Yakiniku Tendan Head Shop opens its rooftop for a limited time in summer so that diners can enjoy yakiniku at a reasonable price? The price starts at 6,000 yen per person including tax for 100 minutes of free drinks, which is cheaper than any other yakiniku restaurant in the area. Students and small children are welcome if accompanied by an adult, and to top it off, there is a spectacular night view from the rooftop overlooking the Kamo River and the city of Kyoto! It’s perfect for a drinking party at work, and it’s definitely worth knowing about this plan, don’t you think?
What happens on rainy days? Let me explain in detail how to make reservations and the conditions for using the Kamogawa Sky BBQ Garden at Yakiniku Tendan Gion Head Shop.
Introduced here is the Kamogawa Sky BBQ Garden, which is open every summer only by the famous Yakiniku Tendan Gion Head Shop, located in Gion Shijo. The following three types of yakiniku courses are available…
- Gion (Omi beef loin/Kuroge Wagyu beef misuji/ Wagyu beef top jalami/ Extra high grade hele/ Extra high grade ribs) 10,000 yen per person
- Naginata (Extra high grade loin/Halami/Ichibo/High grade Karubi/Haneshita Karubi) 8,000 yen per person
- Yamabushi (Tendan loin ribeye/Halami/Toro kalbi/Nakaochi kalbi/Rump) 6,000 yen per person
All courses include the above five types of yakiniku plus sausage, vegetables, kimchi, green soybeans, and a free drink for 100 minutes (120 minutes to reserve a seat). If you need more meat, you can order more for an extra charge, and at the end of the course, if you wish, you can enjoy a bowl of cold Korean-style porridge. With all this included in the menu, doesn’t it sound like you can get your money’s worth even if you are just enjoying yourself?
To use this Kamogawa Sky BBQ Garden, make an online reservation through the dedicated reservation page. Reservations are not that difficult, as all you need to do is enter the minimum necessary information, such as the reservation date and time, the number of people, and the contact information of the representative. Once the reservation is confirmed, it is very easy to change the number of people using a smartphone. However, this system does not seem to accept reservations for single customers, so if you want to use the restaurant alone, you may have a chance if you call the restaurant directly.
Now the question is…what happens on rainy days? Yakiniku Tendan Gion Head Shop‘s Kamogawa Sky BBQ Garden will be cancelled on rainy days. The decision to hold or cancel the event is made by the restaurant based on the probability of precipitation at 3:00 p.m. each day, and in the event of a cancellation, you will be notified at the phone number registered at the time of reservation. In case of cancellation, the phone number registered at the time of reservation will be notified.
Also, even if it is decided that the event will be held on the day of the event, it is not impossible that you may be hit by a sudden guerrilla downpour afterwards. Once the meal has started, even if it is rained out midway through the event, there will be no transfer to indoor seating or refunds. So it is a bit risky in terms of money. If the weather looks doubtful on the day of the event, it may be important to make a decision to cancel early and go to another restaurant.
Kamogawa Sky BBQ Garden: How was it to actually try the rooftop BBQ plan that allows you to use the high-end yakiniku restaurant, Yakiniku Tendan Gion Head Shop?
I will now report on how it went the other day when four of us used the Kamogawa Sky BBQ Garden at the Yakiniku Tendan Gion Head Shop. I’ll start with the view from the restaurant’s rooftop…
Too bad the weather was cloudy, but doesn’t it look really nice? The lights of the restaurants along the Kamo River were shining brightly… A million-dollar night view from the top of a mountain is nice, but a night view within easy reach like this has a different charm, don’t you think? Kyoto is a place where high-rise buildings cannot be built due to building height regulations, but this night view seems to have benefited from such regulations.
In the corner of the rooftop, there is a drink bar like this, where we can get any kind of drink we want for the first 100 minutes of the event. The drinks available include draft beer, Shochu (barley and sweet potato), wine (red and white), whiskey, plum wine, makgeolli, soft drinks, and many more. There is also a selection of liqueurs, so it is possible to make your own favorite cocktail.
Now that the toast drinks were ready, the meat for four was brought out. Aren’t you concerned about the quantity and quality of the meat? No matter how inexpensive it is, you will be disappointed if the meat is very small or of poor quality. It could damage the brand image of the restaurant as a high-class yakiniku restaurant. But don’t worry. This time, we used the cheapest Yamabushi course…
Isn’t the amount of meat more than enough? Actually, our strategy was to order the cheapest course and make up for the missing meat by ordering additional meat, but we ended up being satisfied without adding more meat. Of course, we had no complaints about the meat quality. This time, it was just a beer garden party among friends, so I am not in a position to give a food report like I usually do…
However, there are a few things to note about the outdoor barbeque. First of all, the roaster for grilling the meat is quite powerful. This is a very good thing for grilling meat, but there are times when a sudden gust of wind blows and the fire is stoked, causing flames to rise to the top of the netting. So, be more careful than usual to avoid burns, especially when small children are present. And the wind can also cause them to be exposed to more smoke from the barbeque. It is better not to wear fine clothes that can get smelly.
Next, unlike in-store yakiniku, there is basically no service provided by the waiter during the stay. Other than the initial explanation of how to use the restaurant and the serving of the yakiniku set, we are almost completely left to our own devices. So it would be better to think of it not as “going to Tendan to eat yakiniku,” but rather as “Tendan has prepared a barbecue place and ingredients for you.” If you change your perspective, that will make it even more private, and it will be a time where you can get to know your friends more deeply.
Also, the lighting is set to dark, so it is difficult to tell how well the meat is cooked. The roaster’s heat is so strong that if you leave the meat unattended for a bit, it could get burnt in no time…it could happen. Well, this is completely the responsibility of the individual. Please watch the meat and vegetables more carefully than usual to make sure they are cooked properly.
In this way, I personally enjoyed the Kamogawa Sky BBQ Garden at the Yakiniku Tendan Gion Head Shop for more than the price. There is a risk in case of bad weather, but it is well worth swallowing it and making a reservation. In fact, the Kamogawa Sky BBQ Garden has a total of 86 seats, but it is so crowded that reservations are often not taken every year. I think it is the perfect place to spend a fun summer evening with your friends!
The Sky BBQ Garden is also held at the Kitayama branch… Access to the Yakiniku Tendan Gion Head Shop is a 3-minute walk from the nearest station, Gionshijo Station on the Keihan Electric Railway line.
The Sky BBQ Garden at YakinikuTendan introduced this time is being held for a limited time at the Kitayama branch in addition to the Gion Head Shop. From this Kitayama branch, the mountains in the northern part of Kyoto City are nearby, and in the northwest direction, the boat-shaped flame of the Gozan Okuribi (Bonfire on Five Mountains) can be seen. Taking advantage of this perfect location, they offer a special plan on August 16 every year to enjoy a barbecue while viewing the Gozan Okuribi. It seems to be very competitive, so I recommend making a reservation as early as possible.
