The steakhouse “Kuishinbo Yamanaka” in Katsura, Kyoto, has been revered as a “sacred place for meat lovers” on a TV program, and is a famous restaurant among famous restaurants that beef-loving fans from all over Japan visit and rave about on their blogs. It has also received a high rating of more than 4 out of 5 points on the food log.
The restaurant serves only Omi beef, which is descended from Tajima beef and raised in the best possible environment. Since the restaurant is so particular about its meat, the prices are naturally not half bad. For the dinner menu, it is common to spend more than 10,000 yen per person for a course… This is a restaurant with a sense of being “above the clouds” that is a bit difficult for us commoners to afford.
However, things are a bit different at lunch time. At Kuishinbo Yamanaka, you will be served an exquisite menu featuring Omi beef at a price that even we can afford…
Kuishinbo Yamanaka|Super value-priced lunch menu including Omi beef hamburger steak and beef curry!
Take, for example, the Omi beef hamburger steak lunch introduced here. It comes with an appetizer of baked potato, potage soup, rice, salad, and after-meal coffee, and is priced at 2,800 yen (plus tax). And one more thing…the special Omi beef curry, limited to 10 servings a day, is available for only 1,500 yen (plus tax, including baked potato and salad).
Red wine-flavored demi-glace sauce and a perfectly cooked half-boiled egg… Kuishinbo Yamanaka’s hamburger steak lunch offers two dishes on one plate!
First is the Omi beef hamburger steak lunch. As shown in the image below, a half-boiled egg sits in the center of a donut-shaped hamburger steak.
Now, break the yolk of the egg with chopsticks, followed by the meat with chopsticks…
The bank of meat breaks and the yolk flows out onto the plate like a waterfall. The juices from the meat on the side of the yolk ooze out and join the yolk stream. The destination is a sea of demi-glace sauce that covers the plate generously. This sauce also plays a major role, but I’ll get to that later…
The 100% beef hamburger is rather solidly built, and the feel of the chopsticks in the hamburger conveys a bit of hardness. But in the mouth, it is a different story. It has just the right amount of chewiness, and if you bite into it, the juices from the Omi beef will overflow from the bite in your mouth. The taste of the meat comes through directly, and the red wine flavored demi-glace sauce spreads a fine flavor in your mouth.
And this demi-glace sauce. When the hamburger steak is finished cooking in the oven, the chef pours more sauce than usual on the hamburger steak, which means…
The demi-glace sauce, egg yolk, and juices from the hamburger overflow onto the plate. Mix them together with the spoon provided and put them in your mouth… Each flavor is amplified, and it becomes like a superb beef stew!
Then you can drink it straight from the spoon, or pour it generously over a hamburger steak, or even over rice. Enjoy the blissful moment in your favorite style.
Kuishinbo Yamanaka “Special Omi Beef Beef Curry” limited to 10 servings a day: Please note that it cannot be ordered from the website!
Next up is the special Omi Beef Beef Curry, limited to 10 servings a day. A bite-sized piece of Omi beef is rolled around in the curry roux that fills the platter….
Of course, the meat is cooked very tender and falls apart in the mouth as it is chewed. The texture of the brand beef is enjoyable enough, but when it is added to curry, the Omi beef is defeated by the roux, and the taste of the meat itself…well, to be honest, we cannot shake off the impression that the meat itself is not as good as it should be.
On the other hand, the roux has a mild taste with the sweetness of the meat blended in. The spices are only lightly effective, and it is more like an elegant European-style curry than a spicy curry. This is a Western-style restaurant, after all. It is milder than the medium-spicy retort curry sold on the market, so even those who do not like spicy food can enjoy it.
By the way, this beef curry was featured as an “ordered product” on a certain TV program, and there have been quite a few searches on the Internet about how to order it. But please note that we do not actually sell any gift items, including the curry, nor do we offer any products that can be ordered (we do not have a website at this time).

One regret is that the restaurant is a bit far from the station. You can walk there from Katsura Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line, but it is a bit of a strenuous distance. It is a short walk from the Tsukimigaoka stop on the No. 69 bus that leaves from the east exit of Katsura Station, but this bus also goes a long way around, so it is a bit inconvenient. A cab from the station may be the best option.
