I noticed while researching on the Internet before my business trip to Sapporo this summer that there are many delicious restaurants in the Hiragishi area, a little south of the center of Sapporo. There is Sapporo Junren Sapporo Head Shop, one of the famous Sapporo Miso Ramen restaurants, Rojiura Curry Samurai, a soup curry specialty restaurant that also has a branch in Osaka, Sumire Nakanoshima Head Shop within walking distance from Hiragishi Subway Station, and Menya Saimi, which is arguably the most popular restaurant in Sapporo, a short walk from the station. …Come to think of it, the main store of the soupless noodle specialty restaurant Taoka, which I visited before, is also located in Hiragishi.
I made a list of all the popular restaurants in this area that I had not yet visited during this business trip, and started eating my way around as soon as I arrived in Sapporo. As I was heading for Sapporo Junren with Google Maps, I found SOUP CURRY KING‘s main restaurant nearby. I thought, “If it’s so close by…” and decided to move up my original plan to visit the next day and stop by directly after eating miso ramen at Junren. This way, I could go to another restaurant the next day. Well…
Awarded the Tabelog Curry EAST 100 Best Restaurants four times since 2019…SOUP CURRY KING Head Shop is such a restaurant!
SOUP CURRY KING Head Shop is a Sapporo soup curry specialty restaurant established in 2007. The restaurant has been awarded the “Tabelog EAST 100 Best Curry Restaurants” award four times and was even introduced on TBS’s “Matsuko’s Unknown World” in the past.
I arrived at the restaurant around 7 p.m. on the day I arrived in Hokkaido. The name of the restaurant is “SOUP CURRY KING” in English, giving it a somewhat American atmosphere. The restaurant has 22 seats, including 6 counter seats, in a white-colored interior. I had heard that there was quite a long line to get in, but luckily there were a few empty seats here and there, and I was able to enter the restaurant with zero waiting time.
What’s with the white curry… When I ordered the standard chicken curry at SOUP CURRY KING Head Shop…

Finally, the amount of soup and rice is set. A large portion (1.5 times) of soup is available for an additional 300 yen, while no rice, a small portion, and up to normal (200g) rice are available at no extra charge, and a large portion (300g) or more is available for an additional charge. Let me introduce the Sapporo Soup Curry I ordered this time, Chicken Curry. After about 10 minutes of waiting, the soup curry I ordered arrived in front of me…
At first glance, I felt a great sense of discomfort. I had no idea that such a white soup curry would be served… If I had been wrong, it would no longer look like a curry, but more like a stew of chicken and vegetables. What is this white stuff? Is it coconut milk?
I took a sip of the soup curry while imagining this, but it was different. This is pork bone white soup. And at the same time, it has a sense of seafood broth. In fact, SOUP CURRY KING uses a W soup base, which is a combination of paitan soup made by simmering chicken bones and pork bones for two days, and Japanese-style dashi soup made from kombu, niboshi, and dried bonito flakes, to which they add an original blend of spices to make their soup curry. This idea, maybe the founder was a former owner of a ramen restaurant?
Of course, that’s not the end of the story. The spice stimulation comes a little later to the flavor of that W soup. Without it, it would be just like ramen soup, to say the least. But there is a sense that this spice feeling is eventually absorbed by the mildness of the W soup. Whether you find this “easy to eat” or “not spicy enough” is a matter of opinion…I guess.
The ingredients include a chicken leg, potatoes, carrots, green peppers, cabbage, and quail. Well, considering the low price of 1,300 yen including tax, I have no complaints at all. If anything, the volume of rice is smaller than the ingredients. Therefore, I recommend ordering more rice and spices at SOUP CURRY KING.
Retort curry for souvenirs is also available… To get to the SOUP CURRY KING Head Shop, walk 7 minutes from the nearest station, Minami Heigishi Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Nanboku Line.
SOUP CURRY KING Head Shop sells retort curry for souvenirs at the store…
I am sure that the taste of the soup curry here cannot be found anywhere else, so I recommend buying some for home preservation or as souvenirs (although personally, I am more interested in the soup curry ramen sold together with it). This retort version of soup curry can also be ordered through mail order using Amazon or Rakuten. If you’d like, please click the link below to purchase one…
