“Otona no Okosama Lunch (children’s lunch for adults)”…for those who don’t know what Okosama Lunch (children’s lunch) is, “What’s with that name?”, but for those who enjoyed Okosama Lunch as children, the name may be very intriguing. Hearing that this “Otona no Okosama Lunch” is popular, I visited Mother Moon Cafe Sannomiya Head Shopin Sannomiya, Kobe. I know that the number of Western-style restaurants offering this “Otona no Okosama Lunch” has been increasing recently, but this was my first experience to actually try it. I went to the restaurant to see what it was really like…
Mother Moon Cafe Sannomiya Head Shop is a pioneer cafe in Kansai.
Mother Moon Cafe Sannomiya Head Shop is a pioneer cafe in Kansai with a history of more than 30 years, having been established in 1993. The store is located in a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle of the city, between Sannomiya Center-gai and the main street on the south side of the city. The large glass windows from the alley give a clear view of the interior, and terrace seating is also available. Although the café was established 30 years ago, its design is perfectly acceptable even in the 2025 era. It was probably a very progressive café when it was first established, and was probably very crowded.
The space inside the restaurant is rather small, and according to the Tabelog information, there are 34 seats including terrace seats. The seats inside the restaurant give the impression of being rather cramped, so if the weather is not a problem, I recommend using the terrace seats. It also seems that you can bring your pets when you sit on the terrace. I’d like to try this once in Kobe with my pet…
It has changed a lot from the children’s lunch of the Showa era and has become more fashionable… How was the Otona no Okosama Lunch I ordered at the Mother Moon Cafe Sannomiya Head Shop?
Let me introduce the Otona no Okosama Lunch (price: 1890 yen + tax) that I ordered at Mother Moon Cafe Sannomiya Head Shop on that day. A few minutes after ordering, first of all…

The potato potage was first brought before me. Although it was called potage, it was relatively dry and tasted mainly of milk rather than potatoes.
Just as I was finishing the potage…

The main dish, Otona no Okosama Lunch, was brought out in front of me. It looks too fancy and luxurious to be called a “Okosama Lunch” doesn’t it? For those of the generation who don’t know what a Okosama Lunch is, it is a Western-style lunch that usually looks good on a social networking site. On the other hand, for me, a member of the generation that barely knows the old “Okosama Lunch,” I feel deeply that “times have changed…”
Now, the side dishes that came out on this one plate were as main dishes…
- MMC hamburger steak with homemade demi-glace sauce
- Fried Arheaded Shrimp with Gribiche Sauce
and other two dishes…
- And for dessert, Strawberry Angel Cupcakes.
- Specialty Buttermilk Fried Chicken
- Farmer’s salad with mixed leaves from Awaji Island Mori Farm
- Marinated purple cabbage
- Pumpkin salad with walnut raisins
- Homemade demi-glace spaghetti

Let’s start with the hamburger steak… The hamburger steak is soft and fluffy, and the minced meat inside is fine and elegant to the palate. On the other hand, the demi-glace sauce is rich and thick, giving the hamburger steak a memorable flavor impact that would otherwise be easily popped into the mouth.
Both the hamburger steak and the large fried prawns met my expectations, but what I personally liked the most was the fried chicken. Well, not so much the fried chicken, but the tartar sauce on the fried chicken. The tartar sauce has herbs in it, and it gives me a sensation of being refreshed in my mouth. I felt that the use of those herbs was very Southeast Asian, and I was taken away by the ethnic feeling that I had not imagined.
I left the restaurant satisfied with the Otona no Okosama Lunch at Mother Moon Cafe Sannomiya Head Shop. I saw many other customers ordering this Otona no Okosama Lunch that day, and I thought to myself, “No wonder it’s so popular…”. Although it is a bit carnivorous, including its appearance, I think this lunch is very appealing to women. From an adult male point of view, however, if I were to pay close to 2,000 yen, I would want a little more volume…

Mother Moon Cafe has a total of 14 branches in the Kansai area, mainly in Kobe, including the Sannomiya Head Shop and Kobe International Hall Store. It seems that the Otona no Okosama Lunch introduced here can also be ordered at several branches other than the main store. For those of the generation who know about Okosama Lunch of the Showa era in particular, just looking at the names of the menu items may bring back memories of those days.
