Have you ever heard of “Butter Blend Coffee”? It is a coffee bean (and coffee brewed with it) made by a unique process of soaking freshly roasted coffee beans in butter, and was created in 1977 at a coffee shop called Mikage Danke in Kobe. Almost 50 years have passed since then, and there are several coffee shops that have taken over the name “Danke” and offer butter-blended coffee, including Ameyoko in Tokyo, Shinsaibashi in Osaka, and Minoh in Minoh, but the owner of Mikage Danke is the only one who can make the important beans.
If that is the case, you would want to drink Butter Blend Coffee at a place where the owner is, wouldn’t you? Fortunately, I had something to do in the Mikage area, so I went to the coffee house one day…
The only coffee on the menu is Butter Blend Coffee… Mik age Danke is a coffee house with a great sense of preparedness…
Mikage Danke is located at the south ticket gate of Mikage Station on the Hankyu Kobe Line. The coffee house has been in business for less than 50 years, so I thought it might look old-fashioned, but the luxurious, lounge-like exterior lifted my spirits.
The interior also has a chic atmosphere with a brick and wood-grain interior, creating a relaxing space that sets it apart from Starbucks and the like. It’s also cool to see the waiter working silently behind the counter by himself. The coffee menu also offers only one choice of Butter Blend Coffee (although there are wiener coffee and coffee float options). It’s not just that the coffee is upscale, but you can sense their confidence in their butter blend coffee and their determination, as if to say, ”If this doesn’t work….”
The aroma of butter from the beans being ground to order… What was Mikage Danke’s signature menu item, Butter Blend Coffee, really like when I tried it?
Let me introduce Mikage Danke‘s signature menu item, Butter Blend Coffee (hot, price 700 yen including tax). Here is the image…

It looks like a normal coffee brewed in a slightly larger coffee cup like this, but it has a mellow aroma of butter along with the coffee’s roasted flavor. Or rather, the aroma of butter spreads from inside the counter from the moment the waiter takes your order and grinds the beans. You have to actually go to the store to get this unique aroma, right?
And the taste of that Butter Blend Coffee…it is totally different from the buttered coffee that dieters are drinking. It is not a coffee with butter until it is rich, but rather a coffee with a strong bitter taste that is buttered just enough to soften the taste of the coffee. It is a very strong coffee that is easy to drink, and the mild flavor of the butter makes me feel rich.
This is how I felt when I paid my bill after filling my body and soul with Mikage Danke‘s Butter Blend Coffee. The coffee, of course, is one thing, but the upscale atmosphere and the quietness of the place are also key points. If you are thinking, “Starbucks doesn’t make me feel at home,” I highly recommend this place. If there was a coffee shop like this near my house, I would go there every weekend.
Coffee beans can be ordered by mail order from anywhere in Japan…Mikage Danke is a 2-minute walk from the nearest station, Mikage Station on the Hankyu Kobe Line.
Mikage Danke offers nationwide delivery of Butter Blend Coffee by courier service. You can buy the beans as is, in drip bags, or with iced coffee… Why not try Butter Blend Coffee first, which can be enjoyed in various ways? It would also make a great gift for someone you know who loves coffee. I’ve attached a link to our mail order page above, if you’d like to use it.
