Rokuyosha Coffee Shop. With a name somewhat reminiscent of a secret base, this store is a long-established coffee shop that has been in business since 1950 in Kawaramachi Sanjo, Kyoto. While retaining the retro atmosphere of the past, the third generation owner has gradually introduced new things to the store to make it a place that will please both regular customers and newcomers alike.
I wanted to have morning breakfast at Rokuyosha Coffee Shop, and took the subway so that I could arrive at the store at 8:30 one weekday morning. When I arrived in front of the store, there were quite a few customers gathered in front of the store even though it was a weekday…
Rokuyosha Coffee Shop is a twin-engine business of a ground floor store and a basement store with different personalities….
I entered the store when it opened at 8:30. To the right is a counter extending to the back. To the left were six or seven tables lined with old-fashioned sofas. It is not a large store, so you can enjoy a quiet time without being bothered by the noise (In a large store like Ogawa Coffee, we can’t help but notice the voices of those around us). Yes, there was a slight smell of cigarettes. This is a non-smoking store from 8:30 to 12:00, but after that time, smokers who love coffee gather here and start puffing away without hesitation.
But don’t worry, non-smokers, because at 12:00 the Rokuyosha Basement Store, located down the stairs outside the store, opens. This is a non-smoking store all day until closing time. Actually, this basement store seems to have a longer history than the store on the first floor. Moreover, the coffee beans handled are different between the first floor store and the basement store, and the basement store will also be able to serve alcoholic beverages, mainly whiskey, after 5 pm.
Rokuyosha Coffee Shop has two different locations, one on the first floor and the other in the basement, each with its own unique character. It is possible to enjoy coffee and newspapers with a cigarette in one’s mouth, just as in the Showa era, but perhaps those who do not smoke would rather enjoy the store’s charms to the fullest.
Only 700 yen for this? Rokuyosha Coffee Shop’s morning service menu was a great deal!
Let me introduce you to the morning service menu I tried at Rokuyosha Coffee Shop. The morning service menu, available from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., offers four types of morning dishes, with the standard set of coffee and toast priced at 600 yen (tax included). We can add a boiled egg, vegetable juice, or both as an option, but even if we add both boiled egg and vegetable juice, the price is only 700 yen, which is a great deal! In these days of high prices, this price can be said to be the “best in terms of cost performance”.
This is the full version of the morning service menu that was brought before me. We can choose whether we want butter or marmalade on our toast (butter this time), and kindly, they spread it on from the beginning. Especially the one that surprised me the most this time…
This boiled egg. The shell has already been broken, and the crack is aligned with the depression in the white, so the white is not damaged when the shell is peeled off. I really appreciate this thoughtfulness.
The coffee that plays the starring role in this morning set is the original blend coffee, the signature coffee of the first floor store. It has a heavy bitterness and is the type of coffee that we sip and savor one sip at a time. With a cup of this coffee, we can relax in the store for quite some time. If you don’t like coffee, don’t worry, you can change it with other menu items such as cocoa or soft drinks by paying the difference.
With this morning set in front of me, I stayed in the restaurant for about two hours while having another cup of coffee. On weekends, this kind of usage is not possible because it would disturb other customers, but I was able to concentrate on reading in a quiet environment and spend the most luxurious morning time. Morning breakfast is not as luxurious as the famous Inoda Coffee’s Kyoto breakfast, but the price is less than half the price… I think that being able to enjoy a quiet coffee time at a reasonable price in the prime location of Kawaramachi Sanjo is an overwhelming advantage among the famous coffee shops in Kyoto. We can take home home-roasted coffee beans… Rokuyosha Coffee Shop is a 5-minute walk from the nearest station, Kyoto Shiyakusho Mae Station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line.
At Rokuyosha Coffee Shop, home-roasted coffee beans are sold at the cash register. Prices start at 500 yen for 100 grams of original blend coffee beans, which is also very reasonable. If you like the coffee you drink at the store, why not take some beans home for your own use? We also have a mail order site open, so you can have coffee beans shipped to your local area.
