I was vaguely aware that Okinawa soba varies in style depending on the region, but when I heard that there was a restaurant on Okinawa Island where I could try local soba from Ishigaki Island and other Yaeyama Islands, I decided to visit that restaurant, Miyara Soba Urasoe Branch, during my visit to Okinawa in 2025. Apparently, restaurants serving Yaeyama soba on Okinawa Island are quite rare. Like Yaeyama soba, a certain Okinawan local dish that is rarely found in other restaurants is popular… Miyara Soba Urasoe Branch is a restaurant like this…

Miyara Soba Urasoe Branch is located along National Route 330, which connects Naha City and Okinawa City. The restaurant is quite large for an Okinawa soba restaurant, with a total of 80 seats according to Tabelog information. In one corner of the dining area, there is a shop corner selling the restaurant’s products, and it seems to also function as a drive-in restaurant. There is no doubt that this is a convenient restaurant that can be used by anyone, from solo diners to families with small children.

Each table is equipped with a tablet device, which is used to place orders. As I will explain later, this restaurant serves several types of Okinawan soba in addition to Yaeyama soba. Among them, what caught my eye was the “goat soba.” Does that mean it contains the goat meat I once ate at the Gushiken-ke… I’m tempted to try it, but I’ll pass this time. However, I was drawn to the “Honejiru” menu, which is more prominent than the other Okinawan soba dishes. It’s a stew with pork bones boldly added. This is also said to be a rare Okinawan local dish that you don’t often see at other restaurants. Hmm, which one should I choose… 

After much deliberation, I chose this… Yaeyama soba at Miyara Soba Urasoe Branch. How was it?

After spending a few minutes looking at the menu, I finally decided to order Yaeyama soba at Miyara Soba Urasoe Branch. There are three sizes to choose from: large, medium, and small. The large size I ordered cost 1,080 yen (tax included)…

After waiting about five minutes, the Yaeyama Soba (large) was brought to my table. Seeing the thinly sliced pork and kamaboko toppings, I thought, “Hmm, this is a bit different…” But this is one of the characteristics of Yaeyama Soba (especially the kamaboko, which is a specialty of Yaeyama).

Another major characteristic is the noodles. Yaeyama soba uses thin, straight round noodles. The actual noodles had a slightly angular feel, but the texture was indeed different from the Okinawa soba I had eaten before. They were about the thickness of medium-thick ramen noodles, with a smooth surface and a fairly firm bite. They went down smoothly. Since I ordered the large size, the portion size was also satisfying.

As for the broth, it’s made by simmering pork bones, bonito, kelp, and vegetables for over six hours, resulting in a sweet and gentle flavor. However, even though it’s gentle, the flavor is robust, and I didn’t feel the same sense of lacking flavor as in Takaesu Soba’s broth. So…

There were various table condiments like red ginger and capsicum, but I ate it all the way through without changing the flavor this time. My stomach was fully satisfied, and I was thoroughly satisfied with the Yaeyama soba at Miyara Soba Urasoe Branch. However, there was one thing I regretted as I left the store. I really wanted to try the Honejiru too…
