A popular cafe in Kyoto, Kissa Madrague, is famous for serving reprinted versions of popular menu items from a now defunct store… I visited the Fujii Daimaru Branch, the cafe’s second store, to try the second item on their reprinted menu. The second item on the reissue menu is a limited item available only at this Fujii Daimaru Branch. How was that rare reissue menu actually? If you are curious, please continue reading this article to the end…
Operating in a different style from the retro-inspired main cafe… Kissa Madrague Fujii Daimaru Branch is a store like this…
Kissa Madrague Fujii Daimaru Branch has been operating since April 2020 on the 5th floor of Fujii Daimaru, a department store located on Shijo Dori. When visiting the cafe, it has a pop atmosphere, and unlike Kissa Madrague Head Shop, which is full of retro atmosphere, this cafe is more like a trendy cafe these days. The seating space is spacious, with a rough count of 66 seats (all tables). The space between seats is spacious, and there are no obstacles or steps, making it easy for customers with strollers or wheelchairs to enter.
This is also a reprint of a popular menu from a famous restaurant that is no longer around! How was the Western-style Grill Alone Omurice, a limited menu item at Kissa Madrague Fujii Daimaru Branch, when I actually tried it?
Let me introduce the second item I ordered that day at Kissa Madrague Fujii Daimaru Branch, a reprinted version of a popular menu item from a now-defunct restaurant, the “Western-style Grill Alone-style Omurice (large, 1180 yen including tax)”. Less than 10 minutes after ordering, the omelette arrived in front of me…

A round omelette was placed on top of a flat plate full of chicken rice, and tomato sauce was poured on top of it. This certainly has a strong visual impact. It may be hard to tell from the image above, but the chicken rice is probably about the size of a four-cup bowl of rice. So, the name “large” is not false at all, and even young people with low fuel consumption can fill their stomachs.

Now, let’s try it… The omelet on top is about 5 mm thick, but it is soft and fluffy and has a gentle texture. On the other hand, the tomato sauce on top has a strong acidity, and together with the chicken rice inside, it releases the fresh acidity of the fresh tomatoes in the mouth. At that time, I was in a state of sleep deprivation, but it woke me up at once. The omelette, which was quite hearty, was devoured in about five minutes.
I left the restaurant fully satisfied with the “Western Grill Alone-style Omurice” at Kissa Madrague Fujii Daimaru Branch. My stomach was well filled, and if they let me eat this much for 1,180 yen including tax…. I like the idea of a “reissued menu from a restaurant that has already closed”. I hope that they will continue to offer “reprinted versions of popular dishes from famous restaurants” when the opportunity arises….

The popular Corona egg sandwich, a menu item synonymous with Kissa Madrague, can of course be ordered at the Fujii Daimaru branch. The egg sandwich is so thick that it cannot be grasped with one hand, and is a must-try for egg sandwich fans. Please give it a try at this place, which is easily accessible from the downtown area. It also has considerably more customer seats than the main branch, so you may be able to eat without the stress of waiting in line…
