One day while searching online for restaurants in Osaka serving huge portions, I found a place called Kirin Keller Yamato on this information site and decided to check it out. They featured a dish called “Katsu Omu Domu”—a massive omelet topped with a pork cutlet—and it looked absolutely mouthwatering. One lunchtime, that online article suddenly popped into my head, and I was overcome with an intense craving for Katsu Omu Domu. On a whim, I headed straight to Umeda. So, what kind of place was this Kirin Keller Yamato?
I’d heard it was a huge-portion restaurant, but it’s actually a beer restaurant under Kirin Beer… Kirin Keller Yamato is this kind of place.
This time’s target, Kirin Keller Yamato, is located on the B2 floor of Osaka Ekimae Dai-3 Building, along the southernmost corridor. I was surprised when I got to the front of the shop—it had an atmosphere like a Western-style bar, not at all what you’d expect from a large-portion restaurant. Later, I looked it up online and found out this place is apparently a beer restaurant under the Kirin Beer umbrella. Ah, that explains why “Kirin” is in the name… makes sense.
Inside, there were plenty of middle-aged men and women enjoying meals with beers in hand, even in the daytime. This really feels like a quintessential Osaka Station Front Building spot. The seating capacity is 40 seats total, including 8 counter seats. I felt it had a great atmosphere for grabbing a drink after work on weekdays. My only personal disappointment is that smoking is allowed inside. While entry is restricted to those under 20, non-smokers should be aware…
It wasn’t the huge portion I imagined… But how was Kirin Keller Yamato’s famous menu item, the Omu Domu, when I actually tried it?
So, let me introduce the Omu Domu, the restaurant’s signature menu item that I ordered at Kirin Keller Yamato this time. This Omu Dom can be customized with toppings like pork cutlet, hamburger steak, or fried shrimp. This time, I went with the pork cutlet option, matching what I saw on the info site. The price I was curious about? 830 yen + 200 yen tax = 1030 yen…

Right after placing my order, salad and soup were promptly brought to my table. I polished those off in no time, then waited about 5 minutes…

This is the Katsu Omu Dom that arrived before me. Honestly, my first impression was that it wasn’t the massive portion I’d imagined. That said, if I hadn’t known about the “huge portion” beforehand, the volume would have been perfectly satisfying… Wow, preconceptions are scary, huh?

Anyway, let’s get to eating… Scooping it up with a spoon, the pork loin cutlet was surprisingly thick. The meat alone easily felt about 1cm thick. It had the kind of volume you’d expect from a regular pork cutlet set meal. The demi-glace sauce poured over this cutlet had a strong tomato acidity and a subtle hint of red wine aroma. Thanks to this sauce being generously applied, it wasn’t greasy at all, and I could eat it smoothly without any heaviness.
Meanwhile, the thin omelet contained lightly seasoned ketchup rice, impressively fluffy and separate like fried rice. The ketchup rice was relatively light-tasting, balancing nicely against the stronger acidity of the demi-glace sauce. The ketchup rice ingredients were simple: just onions and ham. It had that classic, old-school omelet rice flavor, appealing to a wide range of tastes.
I finished Kirin Keller Yamato‘s Katsu Omu Dom in about five minutes and left the shop. It was a bit disappointing that it wasn’t the huge portion I’d expected, but getting that size pork loin cutlet as a topping for just 200 yen felt like divine service. However, as I finished my visit and started writing this article, I realized I’d made a big mistake. Looking at other food blogs, it seems the Omu Domu only becomes a huge portion when you order the “Large” or “Extra Large” size. “Huh?! That wasn’t mentioned anywhere…” I thought, looking back at the first online article I saw. Well, what’s done is done. I’ll have to get my revenge somewhere next time…
