While coffee lovers all have their own preferences, if you’re a fan of dark-roast coffee, I think you’ll definitely find this place worth a visit. The shop in question is Marufuku Coffee Shop Sennichimae Main Store in Namba, Osaka. The coffee here was the best dark-roast coffee I’ve ever had. If this has piqued your interest in dark-roast coffee, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, so please keep reading to the end. But first…
The Shop Itself Is a Cultural Treasure… Marufuku Coffee Shop Sennichimae Main Store Is a place like this…
First, let me give you a brief introduction to Marufuku Coffee Shop Sennichimae Main Store. As of February 2026, Marufuku Coffee Shop is a coffee chain with just under 30 locations nationwide. While most of its branches are located within large commercial complexes in city centers, the Sennichimae Main Store stands in a class of its own. That’s because the building itself is so historic that you could almost call the shop a cultural treasure. Founded in Shinsekai in 1934, this long-established shop moved to its current location in Sennichimae after the war and has been in business for over 80 years. The Art Deco-style interior, antique furnishings, and stained glass—all said to have been popular at the time—have been preserved exactly as they were back then, and you can still see them inside the shop today. Of course, you can go there to drink coffee, but in terms of being able to fully immerse yourself in a world of antiques, I doubt you’d find a coffee shop like this anywhere else in the country, no matter how hard you looked.
Given that, it was incredibly popular right from the morning. I visited around 9 a.m. on a weekend morning, and the 117-seat interior was already full, with about 10 people waiting outside to get in. Well, it’s no surprise that people in Osaka’s Minami district wouldn’t pass up a place like this. Needless to say, it holds its own against Starbucks and Doutor, and I honestly believe—without any bias—that it can easily compete with cafes in luxury hotels.
The quality of both the hotcakes and the coffee is in a league of its own… Marufuku Coffee Shop Sennichimae Main Store’s limited-time Mont Blanc Hotcake Drink Set—what was it really like?
So, as I was about to pick up the menu to decide what to order at Marufuku Coffee Shop Sennichimae Main Store, the announcement for the limited-time fall menu caught my eye. That’s right, Marufuku Coffee Shop Sennichimae Main Store is also famous for its hotcakes… Remembering that, I decided to order this Mont Blanc Hotcake Drink Set. The price for the set is 2,000 yen plus tax. The set includes a choice of three drinks: coffee, café au lait, or tea. This time, I went with the iced café au lait.

About 30 minutes after placing my order, the Mont Blanc Hotcake Drink Set was brought to my table. Normally, 30 minutes after ordering feels like a long wait, but since their hotcakes are carefully cooked one by one on a special copper griddle, it inevitably takes time. Besides, as I admired the antique furnishings around my seat and listened to the classical background music, waiting that long didn’t bother me at all.

First up, these hotcakes. In stark contrast to the fluffy pancakes that are all the rage these days, the surface is baked quite crispy and boasts a beautifully even golden-brown color. They give off a distinctly Showa-era vibe—the very essence of a classic, old-school pancake. Each one is over 10 cm in diameter and about 3 cm thick, making them quite substantial. Even before taking a bite, I just know this is going to be a winner.

When I cut into this pancake with a knife, I can feel a crisp texture through the blade. The inside is densely packed, and steam rises gently from the cross-section. Even without syrup, the aroma of the golden-brown, toasted wheat, combined with the gentle sweetness of the eggs—which evokes a sense of nostalgia—spreads across the tongue. It might sound harsh, but these pancakes have such a refined and elegant flavor that the trendy fluffy pancakes of late feel like a lesser version. In addition to these hotcakes, the set comes with a Mont Blanc and ice cream, but in a good way, I found myself thinking, “I don’t really need these…”

As for the other star of the show, the iced café au lait, it retained a solid bitterness even after adding coffee creamer. This iced café au lait actually has about the same level of bitterness as a regular bitter coffee. And when it comes to the combination of this café au lait’s bitterness and the hotcake’s sweetness… my poor writing skills can’t quite capture it, but this is something you really have to experience for yourself at the shop.

I liked the rich flavor of the iced café au lait so much that I ordered a hot coffee on the side, wondering, “I wonder what it’s like black?” (Refill drink: 319 yen + tax). The moment I took a sip, a heavy, thudding bitterness settled on my tongue. This is the No. 1 dark roast coffee in my history. The bitterness is so intense that it’s hard to drink it all in one go. Just like with high-proof alcohol, you end up sipping it slowly, one sip at a time, and as a result, this single cup can keep you occupied for quite a while. Aside from the bitterness, what’s surprising is that everything—from the bean roasting method to the brewing equipment—was apparently conceived and developed entirely by the founder, Mr. Sadao Ibuki. I imagine many people might not like it because the bitterness is so intense, but I think it’s fair to say that, in a sense, this coffee is on par with a cultural treasure…
