One weekend, I decided I wanted to have breakfast in Umeda, so I searched online and found a pure coffee shop called Kissa Sunshine in Higashi-Umeda. This long-established coffee shop, which has been in business since 1973, boasts over 50 years of history, and it seems to be a popular spot that often has lines out the door. Apparently, the current owner has a track record of placing fifth in the All-Japan Hand Drip Championship. “Then, I’m sure I’ll be able to enjoy some truly delicious coffee…” I thought to myself as I headed to the coffee shop…
Due to the reconstruction and redevelopment of the Osaka Nikko Building, it relocated and reopened in the Osaka Ekimae No. 3 Building on May 23, 2025! The newly renovated Kissa Sunshine is like this…
Kissa Sunshine has been operating on the second basement floor of the Osaka Nikkō Building since its inception, but due to the redevelopment of the building, it temporarily closed on April 15, 2025, and reopened on May 23 on the second basement floor of the Osaka Station Front Building No. 3. The store is located on the west side of the building, accessible via a corridor leading from the JR Osaka Station side toward the Yodoyabashi side, and then turning outward. It may be a bit tricky to find without a map at first. The exterior of the store has a classic style modeled after a brick building, but next to the entrance, there is a no-smoking sign and a sticker indicating that the store has been awarded the Tabelog Top 100 Cafés award, subtly displayed. That subtlety really hit the spot for me personally.
When I visited the store on Sunday morning around 9 a.m., there was no line, but the store was almost full. According to Tabelog, the new store has a total of 33 seats, including six counter seats, so even solo customers like me can drop by casually. The atmosphere inside the store is also nice. It has a chic rather than retro vibe, giving it a mature feel. Enjoying morning coffee in such an atmosphere before heading to work could help you start the day in a good mood…
The morning menu available until 11:00 a.m. is a great deal! How was the BLT sandwich breakfast I ordered at Kissa Sunshine?
Let me introduce one of the morning menu items available until 11:00 a.m. that I ordered at Kissa Sunshine that day: the BLT sandwich breakfast (870 yen + tax for a single item). After waiting about five minutes after placing my order, the sandwich was brought to me…

The sandwich featured four slices of BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato) with a single slice of pineapple in the center. The coffee in the background is the café’s signature Sunshine Blend (520 yen + tax per cup). Interestingly, if you order the sandwich and coffee set before 11 AM, the price is the drink cost plus 480 yen (tax not included), which is nearly 400 yen cheaper than ordering each item separately. That’s a great deal, isn’t it?

First, let’s try this BLT sandwich… It’s small enough to hold in one hand, and the bread’s surface is nicely toasted. When taking a bite, the tangy mustard margarine spread inside the bread, the crispness of the lettuce, and the acidity of the tomato are noticeable, but the bacon’s presence wasn’t very pronounced… In that sense, it was a bit disappointing, but still, who came up with this BLT combination? Just seeing the letters “BLT” makes me want to eat it reflexively.

And this Sunshine Blend, with its finely bubbled surface, was surprisingly creamy on the first sip despite being black. With its mild bitterness and a slight astringency that comes through a bit later, this blend was very easy to drink and went down smoothly. It has a slightly different taste from the coffee served at Umeda Coffee House YC or its sister store New YC in Shin-Umeda Food Street, but this coffee also has a gentle, smooth feel that goes down easily. While the morning set is a bit pricier than those places, it’s completely smoke-free, and I’m thrilled to have a new morning option in Umeda.

Coffee tickets offering one cup free are now on sale… Kissa Sunshine is located a two-minute walk from Higashi-Umeda Station on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line.
At Kissa Sunshine, coffee tickets offering one cup free are on sale in the cafe. The price for 11 cups of coffee is 5,200 yen (excluding tax). However, this ticket has one unique feature that other coffee tickets do not have: it can be used for items other than coffee. In other words, it can be used as a voucher worth 520 yen + tax per ticket. This coffee ticket can be used even when you order sandwiches, curry, or omelet rice without coffee—how convenient is that? With this coffee ticket, the risk of unused tickets is significantly reduced. If you plan to use it frequently, it’s definitely worth buying.
