One weekend morning, I was thinking about grabbing breakfast near JR Osaka Station… and while searching online, I stumbled upon information about Hokkyokusei Eki Marche Osaka Branch. Hokkyokusei is famous as the original omelet rice restaurant, and the very dish that inspired the creation of omelet rice is served for breakfast at this location. Once I heard that, there was no question—I had to go, right? So, without even glancing at other places, I headed straight there and arrived around 9 AM…
The convenience of grabbing breakfast on your commute… That’s what Hokkyokusei Eki Marche Osaka Branch is like this…
Directly connected to JR Osaka Station, Hokkyokusei Eki Marche Osaka Branch—I figured it’d be packed from morning onward given its location… But maybe I was just lucky that day, because I got in with zero wait time and no line. Inside, there are 7 counter seats and 10 tables, seating about 27 people. But the place was only about half full… which was a bit surprising. Though, during the time I was there, the whole Eki Marche Osaka seemed pretty quiet. Even the Starbucks in the same building had some empty seats… Maybe it’s an issue with the facility’s overall drawing power?
Anyway, as of November 2025, Hokkyokusei has 17 chain restaurants. Among them, Hokkyokusei Eki Marche Osaka Branch is one of the few that opens at 8:00 AM and offers a morning menu. It’s directly connected to JR Osaka Station, making it super convenient for grabbing breakfast on your commute. Oh, wait, maybe it was quiet because it was a weekend morning and there were no commuters? That makes sense…
This is the precursor to the original omelet rice… What was it like trying the Morning Menu: Mr. Kodaka’s Breakfast at Hokkyokusei Eki Marche Osaka Branch?
So, let me introduce the Morning Menu: Mr. Kodaka’s Breakfast I ordered at Hokkyokusei Eki Marche Osaka Branch this time. About 5 minutes after ordering, what arrived before me was…

A set featuring a plate with an omelet, white rice, and a fresh vegetable salad, plus a drink. This combination of omelet and white rice is the precursor to omurice (Note: You can substitute the white rice for bread). Apparently, there was a regular customer named Mr. Kodaka who had a weak stomach and couldn’t eat other dishes, so he always ordered this menu. Seeing this, the founder thought, “Maybe he’d like something different sometimes…” and added an arrangement, which became the origin of omurice. Incidentally, this original omelet rice was born in 1925, meaning the year 2025 marks the “100th Anniversary of Omelet Rice.”

Now, let’s get to the tasting… The surface of the omelet is cooked fairly thoroughly, but inside it’s a fluffy, runny, half-cooked scrambled egg state. This level of cooking really makes you think, “This is what you’d expect from an omelet rice specialty shop.” The eggs themselves have almost no seasoning, so eating them plain lets you directly taste the rich, deep flavor of the eggs. A thick tomato sauce with minimal acidity is poured over it. While it’s a classic, high-quality omelet flavor, I thought eating just the eggs without the sauce was also nice…
So, in about 10 minutes, I finished the morning menu item, Mr. Kodaka’s Breakfast, at Hokkyokusei Eki Marche Osaka Branch and left the shop. Enjoying a high-quality omelet in a casual atmosphere, plus a drink included, for just 700 yen (tax included) is an incredible value. What’s more, this menu isn’t even available at the Hokkyokusei Shinsaibashi Head Shop. In fact, it might be the only place among all 17 Hokkyokusei locations where you can get it. If you love omelet rice, I highly recommend trying it at Osaka Station at least once.
Original retort pouch products now on sale… Access to Hokkyokusei Eki Marche Osaka Branch is just a 1-minute walk from JR Osaka Station, the nearest station.
At Hokkyokusei Eki Marche Osaka Branch, original retort pouch products are also sold near the register…

The lineup includes ketchup for omelet rice, various omelet rice sauces, and beef curry. The omelet rice sauces especially feature popular Western-style dishes like Hayashi, Beef Stroganoff, and Beef Stew. Honestly, they seem too good to just use as omelet rice sauce… Why not eat them straight out of the pouch, even if you’re not making omelet rice? They’d make great pantry staples to keep on hand at home.
