One weekend morning, I was thinking about grabbing breakfast in the Okazaki area… so I searched on Google Maps and Dews Café Kyotocaught my eye. I quickly scanned the reviews and saw comments like “a famous spot for breakfast.” That settled it—I decided to give it a try! But when I actually went, something unexpected happened that caught me off guard. I’ll get to that unexpected thing later, but first…
Escape the hustle and bustle for a quiet retreat… Dews Café Kyoto is a place like this…
First, let me briefly explain what kind of place Dews Café Kyoto is. The café faces a street west of Heian Shrine. It’s set back from the busy area around Okazaki Park and the art museum, allowing for a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. It feels like a café created with minimal interior work in a turnkey space, but the large windows on the east and south walls let in plenty of light, creating a bright ambiance. Total seating: 7 two-person tables and 1 central round table for 6, totaling 20 seats. You can see outside through the windows, and the spacious central area gives it a nice open feel.
The cafe has Wi-Fi, and the central round table even has power outlets, making it great for charging your phone or bringing in a laptop to work. It’s a really nice cafe like this, but when I visited, there were only a few customers. Its Google Maps rating is also high at 4.6 stars. Honestly, that was surprising… Well, thanks to that, I got to enjoy a quiet morning, so I guess I was lucky.
I was stunned by Dews Café Kyoto’s morning menu… How was the signature Dews Plate when I tried it?
So, let me introduce the signature Dews Plate I ordered at Dews Café Kyoto that day. According to the menu, this plate includes a country-style bread, soup, salad, omelette, grilled vegetables, two side dishes, homemade roast ham, fruit, and a drink…

It’s a pretty substantial breakfast set like this, but actually, this Dews Plate costs 2,500 yen including tax – about the same price as a luxury hotel breakfast. The other breakfast menu items are also quite pricey, and seeing these unexpected prices really took me aback. That said, what exactly are the two side dishes that should be included in this set? I assume it’s one of the vegetables that comes with the salad, but I wasn’t entirely sure.

Anyway, moving on… The main dish, this omelet, has a finely textured surface. When looking at the cross-section, the center is perfectly cooked to a soft, runny state, just like you’d expect from a high-end restaurant. It’s almost completely unseasoned, letting the egg flavor shine through. Personally, I like this taste, but some condiments for adding flavor might be nice. Also, I’m happy it’s packed with vegetables. On days I have a healthy breakfast like this, I feel like I can comfortably get through the whole day.

Now, the hot coffee that came with this breakfast set had a strong aroma, but the bitterness and acidity were quite mild, making it very easy to drink. On the flip side, if you’re not careful, the coffee cup empties in no time. In that sense, it’s appreciated that they fill the cup almost to the rim. But…
Considering the 2500 yen cost, I felt it would be a waste not to get a refill, so I got another cup of coffee before leaving (one free refill of hot coffee only). While the quality as a breakfast set is high, I still honestly think this price for a breakfast set is… That said, I really love the quiet atmosphere of this cafe. In that sense, Dews Café Kyoto might be a hidden gem.
