Soup Curry & Dining Suage is one of more than 200 soup curry restaurants in Sapporo alone, and has been active at the national level, winning the EAST 100 Best Curry Restaurants award multiple times in the Tabelog. The restaurant specialises in soup curry using safe vegetables grown on its own farm in Ebetsu, and is currently operating a total of nine outlets, including five in Sapporo, as well as the Shibuya, Marunouchi, Ikebukuro and Kichijoji outlets in Tokyo. It is a shop that is on the up-and-coming trend and is opening branches overseas to promote soup curry.
How delicious is this soup curry that is so popular mainly in Sapporo? This time, we decided to give it a try at Soup Curry Suage+ in Raccoon Shoji Minami, the headquarter of Soup Curry Suage. 20 minutes’ walk south from JR Sapporo Station, you can find the restaurant on the second floor of a small building, and as you walk up the stairs…
Casual and cosy… this is what Soup Curry Suage+ is like.
I arrived at Soup Curry Suage+ at around 3:30pm on a weekday. It was right between lunch and dinner, and as you’d expect, it wasn’t so crowded that there was a queue, but I think about 80% of the 54 seats in the restaurant were occupied… Despite being halfway through the day, it was quite a busy place.
The interior of the restaurant, with its dark grey walls accented with red, the restaurant’s symbolic colour, is a chic and casual space that looks like it was designed by a designer for young people. Perhaps in keeping with this aim, the clientele that day were mostly young people, all taking it easy as they sipped their ramen. There are counter seats by the window, so even a lone person like me can enjoy a meal here, and the atmosphere is not oppressive at all, so anyone can feel at home. There is no lift, so it may be a bit of a challenge if you are bringing a buggy.
Soup Curry Suage+’s full menu and how to order… It is also available for take-away, so taking it back to your hotel is no problem!
Here we introduce you to Soup Curry Suage+’s full menu and explain how to order in five steps…
Step 1: Decide on the menu
First, decide on your favourite dish from a total of 11 soup curry menus. The regular menu of interest at Suage Plus is…
- Crispy Shiretoko chicken and vegetable curry – 1,380 yen
- Lavender pork curry with seared cubes 1480 yen
- Vegetable Curry with plenty of vegetables ¥1,430
- Chicken Leg Curry (deep-fried or stewed) ¥1,280
- Seseri Curry with Salted Rice Marinated in Malted Rice ¥1,370
- Special Zangi Curry ¥1,370
- Curry with Charcoal Grilled Fresh Lamb ¥1,550
- Hokkaido beef entrails curry ¥1,550
- Oyster and seaweed curry ¥1,550
- Sausage and omelette curry ¥1,400
- Suage Special ¥2,180
These are the prices (prices include tax). In addition, there is a limited-time menu, and when I visited the restaurant, it was lamb meatball curry (price: 1,400 yen including tax)…
Step 2: Decide on the type of soup.
Next, choose the soup of your choice from three types of soup. At Suage Plus, in addition to the standard soup Suage Soup, there are three other soups available: Plus Soup with squid ink and prawn soup with the flavour of prawns. The Plus Soup and Prawn Soup cost +150 yen, but these options are also available if you want to enjoy a slightly different taste. You can also choose to have a large bowl of soup for +100 yen, so make your choice at this stage.
Step 3: Select the spiciness of the soup.
Once you have decided on the type of soup, it is time to choose the spiciness of the soup. At Suage Plus, you can choose from six levels of soup spiciness, from sweet to super spicy, and if you want to make the soup even spicier, you can choose up to four levels spicier with jalapenos. The restaurant recommends spiciness (3) (medium hot), which is equivalent to the medium spiciness of commercial curries. You can increase or decrease the spiciness as much as you think it will be tasty.
Step 4: Decide on the amount of rice
After customising the soup, the next step is to customise the amount of rice. At Suage Plus, you can choose the amount of rice from three levels: small (150g), medium (200g) and large (350g), but only when ordering large rice will you have to pay an additional 100 yen. You can also add homemade achar (+100 yen) and Sri Lankan-style furikake (+150 yen) toppings to your liking, so we recommend adding these toppings if you want a variation of flavours.
Step 5: Add toppings of your choice
The last step is to select the toppings you would like to add. Here are the additional toppings you can select in Suage Plus…
Price Over 30 varieties in all, ranging from ¥100 to ¥450! You can also add additional toppings such as chicken legs, pork cubes and other main-grade ingredients. This way, even if you’re not sure which soup curry to choose from the menu, you can put all the additional toppings you like on it, so there’s no way you’ll regret ordering the wrong thing. You may even want to add a number of star toppings at once for a gutsy and luxurious soup curry.
Note: All soup curries at Soup Curry Suage+ are available for takeaway. There is a separate container fee of 100 yen, but you can also take it back to your hotel and eat it slowly.
Fresh Charcoal Lamb Curry: How was it to actually try the soup curry with lamb, a Hokkaido speciality, at Soup Curry Suage+?
What I ordered at Soup Curry Suage+ this time was a fresh lamb charcoal-grilled curry with lamb, a Hokkaido speciality. As this was my first Suage soup curry, I set all customisations to average, standard Suage soup, spiciness at (3) medium, medium size rice and no toppings.
A little over 10 minutes of waiting after ordering, the fresh lamb charcoal-grilled curry was brought in front of me, and it looked like this…
There are five meaty pieces of lamb in all, and plenty of other vegetables: okra, young corn, pumpkin, aubergine, broccoli, potato, carrot and potherb mustard. The rice, on the other hand, is a blend of white rice and red rice, a type of ancient rice. It is richer in protein, vitamins and minerals than white rice, and just eating this rice will provide you with your daily nutritional needs.
Now, let’s start with the soup curry… It is a royal type based on fried onions and tomatoes, but the overall taste is a little lighter. In contrast to the curries of the medicinal “Magic Spice” or the Japanese “Soup Curry GARAKU”, which is made with a gutsy Japanese broth, the flavour is straightforward and straightforward, with little individuality. Conversely, the taste of the soup curry itself was not that memorable. The spiciness was really at the medium-hot level of commercially available curries, which is normal if you don’t like spicy food.
Next, I tried this soup curry with rice, but the taste was still too weak and I didn’t really like it. Of course it wasn’t bad, but the impact of the curry was weak, and I felt that adding rice diluted the taste even more. I honestly didn’t have a very good image of Suage Soup Curry at this point…
The moment I took a bite of this fried vegetable, I was shocked to the point that I felt a jolt of electricity in my head. This fried vegetable is semi-savoury. Just a few seconds ago, I was a little disappointed at the thinness of the soup, but at this moment, I thought to myself, “I wonder if the soup curry is deliberately made thinner in order to produce the savouriness of the fried vegetables.” My impression changed 180 degrees.
The quality of the vegetables grown on the company’s own farm is really high, and there is no unpleasant bitterness at all. I have no complaints about the degree of frying, which allows you to enjoy the crunchiness of the potatoes, the chewiness of the broccoli and the crunchiness of the buds. After eating the fried vegetables, I regretted that I didn’t need the cured lamb… in the opposite way to what I usually regret. No, the raw lamb was meaty and tasty, but the fried vegetables went above and beyond…
So, Soup Curry Suage+ (Suage Plus) soup curry, in fact, when I tried it, the soup curry played a complete supporting role. As the name ‘Suage’ implies, fried vegetables are the restaurant’s top priority. In terms of volume, it’s less than the soup curry at “Okushiba Shoten” or “Asian Bar Ramai”, but there’s enough to satisfy the average stomach. If you can eat this for around 1,500 yen, you will want to repeat.
You can also order it by mail order or by tax payment… Access to Soup Curry Suage+ is a two-minute walk from the nearest station, Susukino Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Namboku Line.
Now, you can order Suage soup curry like this by mail order or by Furusato tax payment (although it doesn’t come with fried vegetables…). I’ve put links to the Amazon and Rakuten websites below, if you’d like to use them. The expiry date, which is of interest, is 270 days after production, which is sufficient. It’s a good idea to keep it as a stocking stuffer when you want to eat something tasty at home.
