There is a coffee shop in Nakasu Kawabata, where I always stay when I visit Hakata, that I have been curious about for a long time. It is the Sansui Cold Brew, which I will introduce to you this time. The only reason why I was curious about it is because it has “Water-drizzled coffee” in its name. Making water-drizzled coffee takes a lot of time and effort, and I thought it was an incredible commitment to put that on the sign….
However, I usually just pass by the cafe, but wanted to try their special morning offer, which is available from 9:00 a.m., so I went to the cafe for the first time the other day. A leisurely morning with a cup of delicious coffee in one hand… isn’t it great to say the least to have such a morning?
An orthodox café with a clean feel…this is what Sansui Cold Brew is all about!
Sansui Cold Brew is located on the first floor of Hakata Riverain, a commercial facility in Nakasu Kawabata, in what is commonly known as the “Riverain Street Shopping Arcade”. The street side of the cafe is entirely made of glass, so you can see the whole interior of the cafe. The interior of the cafe is nothing new, but it is very clean.
There are 12 tables inside, and including the terrace outside, there are seats for 40 people. Smoking is not allowed inside, but smoking is allowed on the terrace, so don’t worry if you are a smoker. The tables are spaced widely apart, so you can calmly concentrate on your coffee or conversation without worrying about the person sitting next to you. It was also very pleasant to drink coffee while looking out from inside through the window, which gave me a sense of openness.
Only 100 yen in addition to the cost of the drink! Sansui Cold Brew’s “Plus 100 Yen Morning” was a great deal!
Let me introduce you to the “Plus 100 Yen Morning” that I ordered at Sansui Cold Brew this time. Here is the picture…
For only 100 yen plus the cost of the drink, you can get toast and an onsen tamago (soft-shelled egg). The drink is Iced Dutch Coffee Bitter (price 580 yen including tax), so the price for this set is 680 yen including tax! That’s a great deal, isn’t it?

Now, how does the iced Dutch coffee taste? It was not as bitter as I expected. It’s rather fruity and refreshing. And the astringency doesn’t stay in your mouth, leaving a clean aftertaste. It was a little different from what I expected, but I was quite surprised at the clear taste without any unpleasant taste, because this coffee is dripped using natural groundwater from a place called Wakasugi Mountain. I was quite surprised at how clear and tasteless the coffee was.
Isn’t 680 yen for this quality water-drizzled coffee with toast and an onsen tamago (egg) too good to be true? It is a bargain comparable to the morning coffee at Rokuyosha Coffee Shop in Kyoto. This makes me look forward to my stay in Hakata even more. If I may be so bold as to express my desire, I would be very happy if they start offering morning service at 8:00 a.m. or so…
In-store coffee bags are now on sale…Sansui Cold Brew is a two-minute walk from Nakasu Kawabata Station on the Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line, the closest station to the coffee shop.
Sansui Cold Brew sells coffee bags for making water-drizzled coffee in the cafe….
With this coffee bag, there is no need to purchase special equipment to brew water-drizzled coffee. Simply place one coffee bag in a wide-mouth bottle at home and pour 500 ml of water. Leave it in the refrigerator overnight, and your water-drizzled coffee is ready to drink. Isn’t it super easy? It would be fun to take the coffee bag home and try making delicious water-drizzled coffee at home, wouldn’t it?
