Hilight Shokudo Jujo

I visited the Jujo branch of Highlight Shokudo, which has been in business for more than 60 years in Kyoto City and has been a favorite of many young people, especially students. The restaurant is located on the west side of the Jujo intersection on the national highway, a place that non-locals may not seem to have much connection with… but Highlight Shokudo is already an established brand in Kyoto as a “cheap and hearty set meal restaurant”. Jujo branch is no exception, attracting many gutsy boys every day.

I visited the restaurant around 6:30 p.m. on a weekday, and the 25 seats were about 80% occupied by men after work. I sat down at an open counter and looked at the menu for a few seconds, wondering what to order.

Beef cutlet set meal: What did I think of Highlight Shokudo Jujo’s store limited menu, which I happened to find when I visited the restaurant?

The dish I ordered at Highlight Shokudo Jujo this time was a beef cutlet set meal (with rice and red miso soup, priced at 1,080 yen including tax) using a rare part of the flank called “Kainomi”. Until I went to the restaurant, I had no idea that I would be able to enjoy a beef cutlet made from a rare part of beef at Highlight Shokudo. And the price was just a little over 1,000 yen. As one might expect, the beef cutlet was not under 1,000 yen, but I think it can be said that the price was set to maintain the reputation of Kyoto’s representative cheap and tasty diner.

I was surprised to see two small beef cutlets. It looks twice as big as the beef cutlets served at Grill Ippei and other famous restaurants in Kobe. In reality, however, the bread crumbs are crunchy and the beef inside is only about ⅓ of the total thickness. If you subtract that, I guess the amount of pure meat is about the same.

But that’s okay. Sometimes you just want something commonplace that makes you nostalgic, right? The meat is not cooked rare, but the meat is not thick either, but it is definitely a luxurious dish to have during my student days when my income was limited. Drizzled with demi-glace sauce with a hint of sourness from the tomatoes and eaten together with the batter, it may remind you of the modest happiness you used to have when you were a student, saying, “Oh, I remember when I was a student, I used to get a little excited and eat that kind of food…”.
