In Sakai City, Osaka, a city famous for its merchants, there is a famous Western-style restaurant that has been in business for 40 years since 1979. This restaurant is not only full of flavor but also of volume, and in 2012 it was awarded both the Best Restaurant and Best Lunch in the “Eating Log”….
Grill Tommy Part 2|Famous Western-style restaurant continues in Sakai City, Osaka, with high quality in both taste and volume
This restaurant has been introduced many times on TV and in magazines in the Kansai region, and is so famous that it no longer needs any explanation for those with a voracious appetite for food.
This restaurant originally had its roots in a restaurant called Grill Tommy, which was run by the current owner’s brother in Momoya on the Osaka Loop Line. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed, and the younger brother took over the business and opened Grill Tommy Part 2 in Sakai City.
The small interior, with two tables seating four and a few seats at the counter, is somewhat reminiscent of a retro coffee shop. The walls are decorated with colored papers of famous people, indicating that the restaurant has been visited by many food connoisseurs in the past.
The signature item on the menu at Grill Tommy Part 2, which is often featured in the media, is the E-set…
From the front of the image, there is an omelette rice, a cutlet, a fried shrimp, and a cream croquette, followed by a generous amount of shredded cabbage and potato salad, which are hidden underneath. The omelette rice can be changed to curry. This is served with miso soup for 1,300 yen.
It is hard to tell from the picture, but there is more than a cup of ketchup rice in this omelet. Imagine the volume of the entire plate based on this. It is not a huge portion, but there are so many side dishes on one plate that it would be difficult for an ordinary woman to finish it.
I will start with the omelet rice at the very front… The curry sauce, ketchup, and sour ketchup rice on a half-boiled egg that still has a thickened portion somehow reminds me of the modest luxuries of the Showa period.
The bite-sized cutlet has a crispy batter that is pleasant to the palate. On the other hand, the softly fried bale-shaped cream croquettes are filled with béchamel sauce that melts out when you put your chopsticks into the croquette. It is smooth and sweet, and goes well with the tomato sauce on the batter.
And then there are the fried shrimp that sit across the plate from one end to the other…
The batter is a bit thick, so the actual portion of shrimp meat is less than the image suggests. However, the crispy batter makes it easy to eat, and you will feel satisfied that you have eaten a “big fried shrimp”.
This E-set…for the generation born in the Showa era, it feels like all the luxuries of childhood are packed into one plate. The E-set eaten in the retro atmosphere of the restaurant will be a plate of nostalgia that reminds you of the good old days.
Recreating the modest luxury of the Showa generation! Grill Tommy Part 2 is a 10-minute walk from Sakai Higashi Station on the Nankai Koya Line.
