This time I came to the Chinese restaurant “Shorai”, located a four-minute walk from Hankyu Takatsuki City Station. Get off the station in the opposite direction from the downtown area and head southeast. It is a very common restaurant for ordinary people, located across Route 171.
The reason why we came to such an ordinary Chinese restaurant is that this is a famous restaurant known a little bit among the bean curd lovers in Osaka…
Takatsuki’s Chinese Restaurant Shorai, where customers from far and wide come to eat: The much-talked-about delicious bean curd is somehow “very hot and sweet
There is a much-talked-about bean curd dish at this restaurant that customers come all the way from faraway places to try. I see from the menu that there is another type of Bean Curd called “Red Devil Bean Curd” in addition to the regular Bean Curd. This is today’s target. The price is 800 yen per person, which is a bit more expensive than the regular mapo tofu.
However, as one would expect, I could not just end our order with a single order of Bean Curd. I wanted to eat it on a bed of hot white rice. So, as I was flipping through the menu looking for rice, I came across this. The five words “karaage teishoku” (fried chicken set meal). As a self-proclaimed “fried food party,” there was no way I could miss this one.
So, I ordered the Red Devil Mapo Tofu plus fried chicken set meal, a combination that made no sense to me at all. Can you really eat all of it? I spent some time reading while waiting for the dishes to be prepared…
The visual of hell! But when you eat it, it tastes surprisingly gentle… the mysterious taste of red devil bean curd!
Then I waited for about 10 minutes. First, the Red Devil Bean Curd poured into an earthenware pot is served.
First of all, please take a look at the image above. The bright red bean curd soup simmering in a pot. A large number of hawk claws float along with cubes of silken tofu. The dish is aptly named “Red Devil,” and its appearance is reminiscent of the sea of hell.
I was prepared to take a sip of the dish, but the aroma was so strong that it made me swoon even before I put it in my mouth. The aroma is so strong that it makes you swoon even before you put it in your mouth. I am sure that it contains not only red chili peppers but also a lot of spices such as sansho. It is not recommended for those who do not like spicy food or for children.
But strangely enough, when you take a step forward and put it in your mouth, what spreads through your mouth is not spiciness but an indescribable sweetness… It is difficult to describe in words, but it is not an easy sweetness as if it were dipped in sugar, but a strong impact that is combined with umami flavor, and yet It is a mysterious sweetness with a strong impact, yet it is also refreshing.
This is definitely addictive. If I lived nearby, I would go there often. It seems to be very high in calories, and I could easily gain weight and destroy my body.
In the meantime, the fried bean curd set meal also arrived. Now I can eat the fried bean curd with rice.
The secret of the popularity of this cheap lunch menu is also its abundance: the hearty fried chicken set meal.
Now, the karaage set meal, which plays a supporting role this time, is a cheap 680 yen, but it is very filling: a large bowl of rice, a heaping salad, chilled tofu, soup, and five karaage pieces the size of a chicken egg.
The batter of the fried chicken here is so thin that a light touch of the front teeth is enough to tear the batter and reach the thigh meat without resistance. The thigh meat is juicy, but the seasoning, including the seasoning, is not very strong, so it is better to eat it with a sprinkle of salt or other salt provided.
To get to the famous “Chinese Cuisine Shorai” restaurant in Takatsuki, a 4-minute walk from Hankyu Takatsuki-shi Station, which is famous for its mapo doufu (bean curd)!
Now that you have successfully finished both dishes, here are the details of the restaurant.

At night, the restaurant seems to operate as an izakaya (Japanese-style pub). The layout of the restaurant is a Japanese-style izakaya, but the owner is Chinese, and Chinese is spoken throughout the restaurant, making it a bit of a strange place in that sense.
